FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)

Also known as: Fear of Missing Out

The anxiety that others are enjoying rewarding experiences from which one is absent. Used in marketing via limited-time offers, live visitor counts, and recent purchase notifications.

What does FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) mean?

FOMO is the discomfort of believing that others are having a valuable experience one is not part of, a concept first studied in social psychology around social comparison and later applied broadly to marketing. In commerce it appears whenever messaging implies other people are acting now and the visitor risks being left out.

Why does FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) matter?

It matters because it converts passive browsing into urgency: a visitor who might otherwise 'think about it later' is prompted to act immediately when they see evidence that a limited offer, item, or spot is being claimed by others in real time.

How is FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) applied in practice?

It is applied through live visitor counts, recent purchase notifications, and limited-availability messaging, and its effectiveness is measured by testing pages with these live signals against static versions, watching for changes in time-to-conversion as well as overall conversion rate.
